So, I’ve decided to start a capsule wardrobe. You may have seen this floating around Pinterest. Basically, I will be paring down my clothes to only the necessities. I will have basic pieces in neutral colors that I can wear throughout the year. I will then create a color scheme for my capsule wardrobe to add a little variety. See how I created my capsule wardrobe here. Since Texas only really has two seasons, I will be making a summer capsule wardrobe, which will have tank tops and shorts, and a winter capsule wardrobe, which will have all of my sweaters. If you live somewhere with four seasons, you may need to make a capsule wardrobe for each season.
Why do a capsule wardrobe? I have three main reasons: to save money, to save time, and to make packing easier.
1. Save Money
I am the worst about seeing a cute shirt, buying it, and bringing it home to realize it doesn’t really match the rest of my closet. Or I will buy something just because it’s “in style”, even though I may not be crazy about it. With a capsule wardrobe, I will invest in basics that will be in style for many years to come. Each season, I’m allowed to buy new pieces, but they have to replace old pieces. By not having to shop for all new clothes each season, I’ll be saving a lot of money!
2. Save Time
The second reason is to save time in the morning. Have you ever stood in front of your closet full of clothes and couldn’t find anything to wear? Then, you pick out that one shirt you wear at least twice a week? That is my life story. Hopefully, with fewer options and a closet full of clothes that all go together, picking out an outfit every morning will be quicker.
3. Pack for Study Abroad
The third and most important reason is that I will be studying abroad in France in the spring and I am the worst about over packing. I am the kind of person who will bring things I barely use at home because I just might need it while I’m away. Spoiler alert: I never do.
My goal with this capsule wardrobe is that it will be the perfect size for me to bring to France so that I can still look cute without my suitcase weighing over 50 pounds. From what I’ve heard, the French dress very simply and often wear black which means that a capsule wardrobe will help me fit in perfectly!
